Remember as children we loved to play together as playtime was the greatest thing in world besides candy? Things started to shift as we become teenagers and our friends become more dominant in how we spend our activities together. As adults, though we still enjoy being active with a few friends, time and stress seems our greatest obstacles when it comes to getting proper needed exercise. Group exercise or at least having a workout buddy gives us the ability to feel young again and return the power of “playtime.”


Bombarded by the media to exercise, most people understand the benefits of a good workout, but receive little guidance in how to initiate the process. With group exercise, exercises are offered on all levels from beginner to advanced, so participants don’t need to know how to develop and effective workout. Thanks to the right fitness instructor in helping you start a new routing, just show up and have a great time!


Few people have that initial drive to take account of skipped sessions when done solo. However, when you work out with a group or a partner, you suddenly become more accountable for showing up to workouts. Setting up times to exercise with a workout buddy or going to a class ensures that you show up on time to work out. This also works very well if you have a personal trainer, who can assure to hold you accountable for not getting your ideal weight since study shows that showing up for someone results in fewer missed workouts!


It is commonly known that it takes over 3,500 calories to burn a pound and burning more calories than you consume is how you shred the pounds away. With a low-calorie meal and good workouts throughout the week, weight loss is bound to happen. “People who work out with a partner lose up to 10 additional pounds than if they exercise alone” according to Motley Health. In addition, your motivation can increase, especially with people that can help you focus on your weight loss goals. Seriously, have friends that won’t eat junk food in front of you when you clearly have a Pilates class 30 minutes from now.


“Exercising with a friend decreases feelings of fatigue and increases energy”, according to a 2011 study published in the American Journal of Health Behavior. Working out with a friend increases the intensity and duration of an exercise session compared to working solo. A partner can help you push yourself harder than you would work out alone. In addition, exercise is good for elevating mood and reducing stress and with a partner or a group, these effects are enhanced. Lastly, group exercise might also allow your brain to release more endorphins and can help you get through difficult types of exercise by reducing pain and enhance a better mood.

Comic Con brings some of the world’s most avid comic, cosplay, anime and gamer fans alike in the heart of New York City at the Jacob K. Javits Convention Center. With over 133,000 attendees in 2013, it is currently the East Coast’s biggest pop culture convention. New York Comic Con hosts the latest and greatest in comic, graphic novels, anime, manga, video games, toys, movies and television, ranging from panels, autograph signings to exclusive sneak peeks. “And with dedicated professional hours, New York Comic Con is a market place, bringing together the major players in the entertainment industry”.

What is also impressive with the convention is the incorporation of some elements of beauty, fitness, and health for comic con goers. From Ultimate Zombie Survival Experience, hair/makeup/nails makeovers to having dedicated cosplayers (“the practice of dressing up as a character from a movie, book, or video game, especially one from the Japanese genres of manga and anime”) who not only dresses up, but achieved the accurate fitness physique of their respected characters. 1) NYZ Apocalypse-                                                                                                        Why: NYZ Apocalypse is a unique interactive zombie survival experience to be as realistic as possible. The location is an underground top secret prison system that incorporate realistic zombies, heavy weaponry, and environmental sensory (from life-like smells of rotting smells and waste) to give you 45 minutes of intense cardio workout; average heart rate of players can peak well over 150 beats per minute.

Five food additives to stop eating right now

In order to keep up with up with the high supply and demand of food in America, food additives became part of our diet for almost a century. From adding color dyes to enhance appearance, preservatives to extend shelf life and additional chemicals to enhance taste, we have food readily available 24/7. Not to mention, our food processing, packaging and storage is relatively cheap, however we are actually paying a hefty price with our health on the line due to these additives. Some food additives are much worse than others; here is a quick list of top food additives to avoid:

Artificial Sweeteners-

Aspartame (Equal), Sucralose (Splenda) and Saccharin (Sweet ‘N Low) are found in foods and beverages and labeled “sugar-free”, “diet” and “natural” because it’s made from sugar. You will find these sweeteners in diet/sugar free sodas, desserts, powered drinks, cereal and much more. Aspartame is actually neurotoxic and is believed to be carcinogenic (cancer-causing) and have more reports of adverse consequences than all food additives combined. This will erode intelligence and buffer short term memory. Other sweeteners, such as saccharin is made from petroleum. Ailments caused by artificial sweeteners include: “brain tumor, diseases like lymphoma, diabetes, multiple sclerosis, Parkinson’s, Alzheimer’s, fibromyalgia, and chronic fatigue, emotional disorders like depression and anxiety attacks, dizziness, headaches, nausea, mental confusion, migraines and seizures.” We recommend drinking water at least half your body weight in ounces.

High Fructose Corn Syrup (HFCS)-

This is a highly refined artificial sweetener that is found in almost all processed foods. A cheaper form of glucose and chemically similar to sucrose (table sugar), HFCS packs on weight faster than any other ingredient, contributes immensely to diabetes, obesity, LDL (bad cholesterol) and other harmful effects. Even worse that “the case against HFCS ranges from claims that it inhibits leptin—the hormone responsible for telling your brain that you’re full—damages tissue and can contain toxic levels of mercury.


Monosodium glutamate is a food additive with many names including maltodextrin, sodium caseinate, yeast extract, hydrolyzed/autolyzed vegetable protein and even citric acid. With over 40 forms of this addictive found in grocery stores, MSG tends to duck and cover its name in order to produce adverse effects, no matter what name it reads. Found in Chinese food, chips, seasonings (especially cheap), most Campbell soups products, ramen noodles, frozen dinners, packaged meats, cookies, and salad dressings, MSG is known as an excitotoxin, a substance which overexcites cells to the point of severe damage or death. Regularly consuming MSG may result in adverse side effects including depression, eye damage, fatigue, headaches, high blood pressure, and obesity.


Butylated hydroxyanisole (BHA) and Butylated hydrozyttoluene (BHT) are preservatives found in potato chips, chewing gum, cereals, enriched rice, shortening and vegetable oils to keep them from expiring fast and changing color/taste. Although the FDA allows them, the Department of Health and Human Services warned that they are known as carcinogens. They are known to: “negatively impact sleep and appetite, and have been associated with liver and kidney damage, hair loss, behavioral problems, cancer, fetal abnormalities and growth retardation.”

Sodium Nitrate/Sodium Nitrite-

Sodium nitrate (or sodium nitrite) is used as a preservative for coloring, and flavoring in processed meats including ham, hot dogs, bacon, deli meats, corned beef and hamburger meat. The name might sound harmless, but sodium nitrate is very carcinogenic once it enters the human digestive system. From there, it forms a variety of nitrosamine compounds (potent cancer-causing cells associated with brain, esophageal, stomach, oral and bladder cancers) that enters the bloodstream and wreaks havoc to several internal organs including the liver and pancreas. This causes dizziness, headaches, nausea, and vomiting. History wise, sodium nitrite is widely regarded as a toxic ingredient and the USDA did try to ban this additive in the 1970’s but food manufacturers vetoed it. Why? “Simple: this chemical just happens to turn meats bright red. It’s actually a color fixer, and it makes old, dead meats appear fresh and vibrant.” Not to mention, there was no alternative for preserving packaged meat products. Talk about silent, but deadly.
